“The children’s museum idea is Brooklyn’s gift to the world.”
Anna Billings Gallup, museum pioneer, 1926
My memory of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum is of walking with total absorption and fascination past cases and cases of old children’s toys, many hand carved. As I read about the museum today, it is vastly changed. Renovations completed in September of this year have resulted in what sounds like something quite incredible and delicious: 100,000 square feet interactive exhibits and nine galleries. Designed for children ages two through ten, it’s not just about toys. It’s about science and world culture. Given the richness of what is offered, it promises a great day of reasonably-priced family fun: just $7.50 per person, adults and kids.
The museum was founded in 1899. It is the first ever museum dedicated to children and the oldest children’s museum in the world. I wish I had clearer memories of it. If you are living in Brooklyn or going there to visit, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum looks like something you might want to consider visiting and dropping into your own memory bank. I placed a link to the website (a colorful and fun site) in the sidebar to your right.
P.S.: To follow-up on my last post: I completed the NaNoWriMo writing project and am a “winner” for 2008 with over 50,000 words. Hooray!
